Santa Verdina's Church Restoration
Santa Verdiana’s building is located in the historical quarter of Santa Croce in Florence. The ancient monastery occupies a quadrangular block surrounded by via Della Mattonaia (formerly known as via di Santa Verdiana), via dell’Agnolo and Largo Pietro Annigoni. In 1983, the complex is bought by the University of Florence and restored to host the Faculty of Architecture. At the center of Santa Verdiana, we can still find the ancient cloister of the monastery as well as five courtyards. The built parts of the complex were adjusted to fit educational purposes, at the exception of the church of Santa Verdiana, that is a reminder of the sites religious history. In this project, we tried to create new spaces as exhibitions to define new functions. since this is a restoration project two factors are very important :
1: The alterations and design must be completely matched with the historical part
2: The alterations and design must be distinguishable.
