Follonica is located in the center of the broad bay near the west border of Italy.in this project the main concern was sustainable design with the help of double-skin facade system plus using energy analyzer software to reach the best design.

Double Skin Facade

Double Skin facade is a system of the building consisting of two skins placed in such a way that air flows in the intermediate cavity. The ventilation of the cavity can be natural, fan-supported or mechanical. The glass skins can be single or double glazing units with a distance from 20 cm up to 2 meters. The type which we used named shaft box type: In this case, a set of box window elements are placed in the façade. These elements are connected via vertical shafts situated in the façade. These shafts ensure an increased stack effect. In order to connect the first part which is space frame with the last part which is concrete, we decided to use double skin facade with glazed windows because as it visible in diagrams below we will also have a good air condition and light inside the school.

Energy strategy

The thermal flue on the south-west elevation was designed to intercept solar gain with vertical timber louver blades that shade against direct sun, protecting the conditioned educational space from direct solar insolation. The second skin not only protects the solar control devices but can also be used to temper the internal environment. Internal cooling loads are reduced in the summer by natural ventilation of solar gain in the glazed cavity, and in the winter heating demand is reduced by the closure of the cavity, creating a thermal blanket around the conditioned interior.
